It is an isolated mountain massif located in Svay Leu District and some 48km from Siem Reap. Its highest point is 487 meters. This is widely regarded as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire. During the constructional period of the ancient temples in the ninety century, sand stones were brought from this sacred mountain to Angkor. It was here at Phnom Kulen that King Jayavarman II proclaimed independence from Java in 802 A.D. The site is known for its carvings representing fertility and its waters hold special significance to the people of Cambodia. Just a few inches under the surface of the water, over 1000 carvings of Yoni and Linga are etched into the sandstone riverbed. The waters are regarded as holy, given the sacred carvings which also include a stone representation of the Hindu god Vishnu lying on his serpent Ananta, with his wife Lakshmi at his feet. A lotus flower protrudes from Vishnu’s navel bearing the god Brahma. The river then ends with a beautiful waterfall. Phnom Kulen is regarded highly by Cambodian people as a sacred location and has developed into a great tour destination. (Please carry swimwear or appropriate dress, towels if you want to get into the waterfalls)

Later proceed to Tonle Sap, and visit the Kompong Phluk Floating Village. A remarkable village built entirely on stilts, where there is time to explore the various houses, school and shops before boarding your private boat.

Local Cambodian believe that Preah Ang Chek Preah Ang Chorm Shrines protection for entire town of Siem Reap, Preah Ang Chek Preah Ang Chorm shrine is also believed to bring good fortune to newly married couples and is therefore frequently visited by newlyweds on their wedding day.

Later in the afternoon, you'll travel through the traditional village of Preah Dak to the 12th century temple of Banteay Samre. Built by King Suryavarman II, the genius behind Angkor Wat, this temple has been extensively restored. The temple is unique in that over-quarrying of sandstone led to the use of laterite for the roofed corridors. The pediments above the inner doors here include some of the most accomplished carving from the Angkor period.

We continue further north to Banteay Srei, Angkor's ultimate art gallery. This petite pink temple is the jewel in the crown of Angkor-era sculpture. The elaborate carvings here are the finest found in Cambodia and the name translates as 'Fortress of the Women', thanks to the intricate detail here, considered too fine for the hands of a man. Originally believed to date from the latter

part of the Angkor period, inscriptions at the site suggest it was built by a Brahman in 967. However, some architectural historians have suggested that the inscriptions may date from an earlier structure on this site and the temple is in fact later, marking a high-water mark in Khmer sculpture.

visit to Ta Prohm, the "Tomb Raider" fameOne of the area's most beautiful temples, Ta Prohm has been left relatively untouched since it was discovered and retains much of its mystery. Its appeal lies in the fact that, unlike the other monuments of Angkor, it was abandoned and swallowed by the jungle, looking very much the ways most of the Angkor temples appeared when European explorers first stumbled upon them. Prasat Kravan, Srah Srang ("The Royal Baths" was once used for ritual bathing), Banteay Kdei (surrounded by 4 concentric walls), Visit the unique brick sculptures of Prasat Kravan. Weather on this trip:

Weather – Siem Reap:

October, with temperatures and humidity falling towards their lows of the year and the countryside vibrant and green this is the best time to visit Siem Reap. October is ideal for comfortable touring and the country is at its most beautiful with villages surrounded by emerald green rice paddies. You may expect rain during afternoons.
Daily high temperature are constant at around 31℃, daily low temperatures follow a similar pattern and are constant at around 24℃.

Clothing and what to carry:

Since the weather is consistent across most of the destinations (ranging from 31°C to 21°C), please plan your clothing accordingly. A light sweatshirt, plenty of sunscreen, strong sun block, sun glasses, hats.

Good walking boots with ankle support or a pair of trekking sandals which can fit socks underneath can be a good option. Flip flops are worn a lot but you should be careful because some are more slippery than others when it is wet. Make sure to bring lightweight raincoat against the wet here, umbrella as additional would be good idea. Sandals with the rugged bottom for hiking around the town.

Taxis and getting around:

As discussed earlier, the best guide to get around is Google Maps. This will give you both the cab options and as well as the public transfers. For the public transfer options in Google Maps, please use the “Arrive By option” to plan your departure time.

Tipping

Cambodia isn’t a tipping country, but due to the low wages of the workers, gratuities go a long way. The Cambodian currency is called Riel. Riel notes come in 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000, 10,000, 50,000 and 100,000 values, but the 500 Riel note is most commonly used. U.S. dollars are also commonly used in Cambodia, but make sure you exchange your currency for Riel when arriving in Cambodia and then vice versa when you leave. One U.S. dollar equals around 4,000 Riels.

There is no standard amount of gratuity to leave at a Cambodian restaurant, but waiters and waitresses will always appreciate a tip. 10% of the total bill is probably around average but feel free to leave more if you felt that the service was excellent. If you are not satisfied with your service, then don't feel obligated leave anything. That said, this should prove to be an exceptionally rare occurrence in Cambodia as the service staff really do go out of their way to look after their customers.

It's good tipping etiquette to leave around 10% for your tour guide. They will accompany you throughout the entire tour, while giving you cultural and local knowledge and they will also serve as your translator if you need it. Your tour would not be as enjoyable without your tour guide, so make sure you show your gratitude. Also, leave a gratuity for the driver (if this person is separate from the tour guide) of around $1-2 per day.

Generally, give the bellman around $1 per bag that he carries to your room. Give the maid around $1 a day. You are not obligated to tip any of the other hotel staff unless you feel led to do so.

If you are happy with your spa services, then tip your therapists as much or as little as you like. Never feel obligated, but tipping is a great way to show your appreciation. You could leave a few dollars extra and it will be very much appreciated.

Tipping your taxi driver is up to you. Do keep in mind that Cambodian taxi drivers will not necessarily expect tips, but because they do not make much money, they will appreciate them. If you feel as though your taxi driver went out of his way to help you or was extra friendly, consider leaving him a few dollars. Another option is to let him keep the change after rounding up to the nearest dollar.

Quick tips

  • Please carry your personal water bottles when on tours. There are free, drinking, water fountains everywhere and you can fill water at these stations.
  • You can buy gifts and souvenirs at super markets rather than the shops when you on the walking tour – since they are a lot cheaper at the super markets.
  • Please carry bags / backpacks that can also be locked.
  • You can carry some ready to eat snacks or Indian food items like pickles or powders or ready to eat mixes – since it is a long trip one normally tends to miss home food :). There are many Indian restaurants in all the cities, so you can also try them when feel home- sick. Vegetarian local food is available in plenty like pizza, pasta etc. and will also be a lot cheaper
  • Once again the best place to buy breads, cheese, jams, quick eats is the local super market
  • Please carry a few passport size photographs with you – this may come in handy when you are buying a local SIM Card or applying for any special permits etc
  • Always carry an identification card on you. Some of the tours may want to verify your name
  • Please be careful with your belongings when you travel especially when going on the group tours and traveling on public transportation
  • Please ensure that the FOREX Card is loaded. You can also carry some local currency in cash – Euros and British Pounds for quick tips or easy purchases you may need to make when you land
